Trump had faced a backlash after insisting on a rally in Oklahoma a week ago despite virus concerns. Giménez announced that all of his county's beaches will be closed July 3-7, and possibly longer.
Previously, L.A. County beaches were closed on March 27th in an effort to curb coronavirus infections. The seven-day average of the daily positivity rate has increased from 5.8% two weeks ago to 8.4% as of Monday. "The Fourth of July holiday weekend typically means large crowds and gatherings to celebrate, a recipe for increased transmission of COVID-19", said Barbara Ferrer, PhD, MPH, MEd, Director of Public Health. According to county health officials, nearly half of bars and 33 percent of the restaurants inspected over the weekend were not following social distancing rules and employees were not wearing masks or face shields at 54 percent of the bars and 44 percent of the restaurants.
Ferrer said one Los Angeles business was shut down over the weekend because more than 150 people were found to have tested positive. This closure also includes piers, beach parking lots (except for permit holders), beach access ways, bathrooms and beach bike and pedestrian paths.
In other words, all beaches in the county will need to close from Friday to early Monday morning, the entirety of the holiday weekend.
