Play-in round team wins draft lottery, shot at Lafreniere

Ottawa Senators hoping for some good luck entering the NHL Draft Lottery

No. 1 pick in 2020 NHL Draft awarded to placeholder team

An interesting twist has come to the NHL's return to play courtesy of the league's draft lottery that may have gifted two of the three NY hockey teams a chance to pick first.

The lottery - used to determine the first 15 picks in the draft - will include the seven teams that did not make the Stanley Cup qualifiers, plus eight teams that will be eliminated in the playoff qualifiers.

One of the balls representing playoff teams "won" the first pick and now the lottery moves on to what the league is calling a "second phase".

After the league-worst Detroit Red Wings dropped to fourth, the Los Angeles Kings got the second pick, and the Ottawa Senators ended up with Nos.

In 2019, the Red Wings fell to No. 6 in the lottery despite having a 28.8 percent chance of winning a top-three pick after finishing 14th in the East.

Apple cites performance gains as another advantage of the transition, and so far, we don't have a reason to discount that claim. This is kind of a big deal, especially since Apple is including AMD GPUs with its laptops and desktops.

The No. 1 pick in the 2020 draft will likely be forward Alexis Lafreniere, the two-time CHL player of the year.

"Still not drafted, so we'll still have to wait a little bit", said Lafreniere, a star left winger for Rimouski Oceanic in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League who also was captain of Canada's world junior championship gold medal-winning team.

Meanwhile, Sidney Crosby's Pittsburgh Penguins or Connor McDavid's Edmonton Oilers could get lucky again or Taylor Hall could bring his lottery luck to a third franchise.

The lottery took place at NHL Network studios in Secaucus, New Jersey, just outside NY. "So knowing we have the fourth pick, there are going to be great options for us and we'll be excited about the prospect that we get, and he'll have tremendous potential to be a good National Hockey League player". But the Wings really need one of these to hit eventually. "We can sit here today and feel sorry for ourselves if we want".

The sixth, seventh and eighth picks went to the Anaheim Ducks, New Jersey Devils and Buffalo Sabres, respectively.
